Role

Who You Are

You are educated to a degree level or have equivalent experience in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, or building conservation. You have extensive experience in providing conservation advice on a wide range of development proposals, including residential, commercial, major strategic development proposals, and those relating to Historic Buildings and Conservation Areas. You are adept at working in politically sensitive environments and delivering high-quality briefings and presentations to senior officers, elected members, key stakeholders, and the public. You work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders and excel at negotiating urban design solutions. Your thorough knowledge of current legislation and guidance related to urban design and historic buildings, along with your excellent oral and written communication skills, equips you to effectively manage and prioritize projects.

What the job involves

The role, based in Sutton's Planning Department, involves providing expert conservation and heritage advice to the Development Management service and the Strategic Planning Team for key redevelopment sites in Sutton Town Centre. You will collaborate and liaise with Historic England to manage heritage considerations. Your responsibilities include offering specialist advice on development proposals, negotiating heritage issues, and maintaining a constructive relationship with Historic England. You will also provide heritage advice for the review of Sutton's Local Plan and assess the need for updates to the Sutton Town Centre Conservation Area Character Appraisal and Management Plan. This role is part-time, comprising 14.5 hours per week.
