Role Overview A frontline Child Protection Social Worker works within children’s social care teams—often family safeguarding or child protection teams—providing early intervention and taking direct action to protect children at risk. They: Respond to referrals and safeguarding concerns Conduct assessments and engage directly with children and families Develop and implement intervention plans Work collaboratively with multi-agency

Key Statutory Duties

  1. Investigate and Assess Protection Concerns Respond to child protection referrals (neglect, abuse, exploitation) Conduct holistic assessments around child safety and welfare Identify and evaluate risk levels to child Protection Section 47 Investigations

  2. Conduct Home Visits and Direct Engagement Regular visits to monitor family dynamics and child well-being Build professional relationships with children and families to foster trust

  3. Develop and Monitor Safety Plans Create tailored safety plans to reduce risk of harm Engage families to reinforce protective measures Review and adjust plans based on ongoing evaluating risk

  4. Multi-Agency Collaboration and Coordination Coordinate with police, health services, education, housing, and domestic abuse specialists Lead or participate in Child Protection Conferences and strategy meetings Regular Multi-Agency Meetings for CP and CIN 4 weekly

  5. Court Reports and Legal Proceedings Prepare written reports for legal hearings Provide expert evidence in court and represent the child’s best interest Attend Legal Planning Meetings

  6. Looked-After Children & Care Leavers Ensure children removed from home receive stable care Promote their educational, emotional, and developmental needs Support care leavers in transitioning to independence

  7. Record-Keeping and Reporting Maintain accurate and timely case records in line with government statutory timescales Visit 10 working days Child Protection 20 days Child in Need Document assessments, plans, decisions, and interventions Provide accounts for audits and performance monitoring

  8. Uphold Legal & Policy Standards Follow legislation: Children Acts 1989/2004, Human Rights Act, Equality Act Implement guidance: Working Together to Safeguard Children

Additional Responsibilities and Skills Risk Analysis Support : Identify risk and protective factors—substance misuse, domestic violence, exploitation Therapeutic Direct Work : Provide trauma-informed intervention to children and parents Advocacy & Legal Engagement : Represent children in diverse forums Team & Supervision Participation : Take part in case discussions, group supervision Continuous Professionalism : Keep updated on best practices, legislation, and multi-agency approaches
